Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he loved taking part in various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these card games while playing his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra money by being an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus more on the game.
The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard had access into several of the best players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Las Vegas and play in the WSOP tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard moved to Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the successive 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
