Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming really aggressive in these card games as he was playing his dad. After finishing high school, Howard made a decision to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more sleep and focus more on poker.
The real improvement in his abilities happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would frequently compete against each other. Howard was able to access a few of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategy ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker world today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and played cash games for the following 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
