Gus Hansen had a marvelous year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only player to make it to the last poker table in 3 of the events. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on The Game Show Network where he bought into the game for $400, 000. You may recall one of the biggest pots in big stakes poker history up against Daniel Negreanu. He secured a big pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many televised poker appearances and is thought to be one of the strongest gamblers anywhere in the world. While gambling on net poker, another side of Hansen has been seen. Gus regularly competes in the 200/400 NL maximum buy in of $40, 000. Gus generally buys in for the min of Sixteen Thousand dollars and plays very weak. He waits patiently for a decent hand and then pushes all in. I accept that Hansen is an outstanding poker player but certainly not even close to the regular players at 200/400NL. Unless Gus is bankrupt, he has little or no reason to sit at the game with the minimum buy in.
Buying in for the minimum takes most of the expertise out of big stack poker. Gus is assumed to be one of the best players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I think television can skew our view of the real world sometimes. The best players in the world may be players you have will not have heard about. Gus can be seen participating in internet poker on Full Tilt. He usually plays in high stakes omaha hold’em and texas hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he use his skills in cash rounds?
